BABYLONIA
Cognomen fuit Seleuciae, cuius (in confluente Euphratis fossâ perducti atque Tigris ???onditae a Seleuco, haud longe a Babylone) vicinitate exhausta est Babylon et in solitudinem redacta. De ea Plin. l. 6. c. 26. quae tamen Babylonia cognominatur. libera hodie ac sui iuris Macedonumque moris. Idem ubique Babyolniam eam vocat, inter alia quoque l. 6. c. 27. Citra Seleuciam Babyloloniam CCXXV. passnum. Et paulo post, Abest a Seleucia Babylonia CCCCL. M. P.Nempe ex regione, in qua condita fuit, hoc cognominis ista Seleucia accepit, ad discrimen coeterarum Seleuciarum, ut Seleuciae Pieriae etc. Sic Καισάρεια Καππαδοκία, Caesarea Cappadocia, quae in Cappadocia, ut distingueretur ab aliis urbibus eôdem nomine, apud Stephanum in voce Καβησσὸς; Antiochia Syria dicta est ea Antiochia, quae in Syria sita erat; Antiochia Pisidia, in Tab. BABYLONIA
Regio, quae nunc Yerach, pars fuit Assyriae veteris, sub qua etiam Chaldaea comprehensa erat. Nic. Lloydius. Laxe nimis a Solino extenditur, c. 56. Chaldaeae genti caput Babylonia
Semiramidi condita, tam nobilis, ut propter eam et Assyrii et Mesopotamia in Babyloniae nomen transierint; Ubi priori locô Babyloniam urbem quoque vocat, contra Veterum morem, qui provinciam solam hôc nomine insigniêrunt. Sed diversas semper ac distinctas fuisse tres has provincias, Mesopotamiant, Babyloniam et Assyriam, certum est, et sic recensentur apud Ptolemaeum. Isidorus in provinciis Imperii Parthici enumerandis, Assyriam non nominat, sed eam sub Mesopotamia comprehendit, Μεσοποταμία καὶ Βαβυλωνία. Sane et Babylonia etiam pars Mesopotamiae fuit. Plin. l. 6. c. 26. Mesopetamia tota Assyriorum fuit, vicatim dispersa praeter Babylonem et Ninum. Proprie vero dicta est Babylonia, regio circa Babylonem, eratque pars Assyriat.
